What exactly is glass etching?
It is essentially creating a picture, or piece of art, on the surface of glass by applying acidic, caustic, or abrasive substances. It is taking minute amounts of glass from the piece, giving the image a rough surface and translucent quality of frosted glass.
Glas. Art by Steve uses one technique in particular to give the ultimate frosted-etch, created to last. Abrasive blasting, or "sandblasting", is what is used to create the custom designs, as it is the technique that is most often used commercially. How it works is by using high pressured air (a compressor) mixed with an abrasive material that cuts away at the glass to create the desired design; the longer the pressured air and abrasive material remain in one spot of the design, the deeper the cut in the glass will be.
The time it takes to create a custom job will depend on the size and detail of the desired design.
